Taking its cue from ParkCity’s philosophy of promoting environmentally-friendly and sustainable developments, The International School @ ParkCity located in the townships of Desa ParkCity and ParkCity Hanoi in Vietnam, have mandated environmental education as part of its curriculum.

Acknowledging that it is our children and the generations to come who stand to benefit the most from sustainable living in a natural environment, the schools are taking lessons beyond the classroom to educate their students on the importance of climate change and a healthy environment.

Abiding to the popular adage, “you are never too young to learn, never too old to change”, the schools have enlisted their students to actively promote good environmental practices by providing them with the building blocks they need to live eco-friendly and sustainable lives.

So, what has the Eco-Team been up to at
The International School @ ParkCity Hanoi?

  • Lovingly cultivated by students and teachers, the school’s garden is flourishing and nurturing increased biodiversity.
  • During the latest ʻDragon’s Den’ type activity for secondary students, some products featuring a sustainability theme were sufficiently viable to persuade the school’s leadership in introducing these products into the school shop.
  • In a bid to express their concerns about climate change, some of the older students entered an Asia-wide speech competition where they passionately expressed their thoughts on the current issues facing the planet.
  • Instituting numerous recycling schemes to educate the school community about the importance of recycling and waste diversion including reducing the volume of single-use items, launching a ʻbring your own’ campaign, establishing waste-sorting bins and introducing an audit of school waste to monitor progress.

Progressing conservation at The International
School @ ParkCity Kuala Lumpur

  • It has implemented creative and strategic projects and initiatives to help raise awareness about environmental issues spearheaded by the Conservation Ambassadors — a student-led and student-driven initiative from all age groups who work together to highlight environmental and conservation issues to other students.
  • The Year 10 students’ annual conservation project sees students explore solutions for the topics of their choice, providing them with the opportunity to be proactive and innovators in educating the school community about their conservation topics. The project also brings together experts from a range of conservation fields in Malaysia, affording students greater exposure and presenting them with opportunities to volunteer.
  • It has banned single-use plastics from the school cafe, including disposable cups and straws, plus recycling and upcycling plastics.
  • To minimise waste, the Conservation Ambassadors in collaboration with a local NGO called ʻBatik Boutique’, has designed and launched safe, reusable fabric face masks for the school community.
  • It has engaged the school community further via the upcoming educational multimedia e-magazine named ʻEcotopia’, which aims to impart knowledge and raise awareness about global environmental issues.
