Serving up slices of heaven

Jaslyn Cakes has firmly established its name as a confectionery powerhouse, with its first two outlets in Bangsar and Mont’Kiara garnering many positive reviews and a constant stream of customers. Its buttery and sugary indulgence can now be enjoyed at The Waterfront,  Desa ParkCity which has hosted Jasyln Cakes’ third and latest cosy cafe since June 2023. In an exclusive interview (edited for clarity) with Parklife, The Waterfront branch’s assistant manager Tasha Goh gives us the whats, whys and hows.

Why has Jasyln Cakes picked The Waterfront?

We love the family-oriented, neighbourhood vibe at The Waterfront, and as we are all animal lovers (you can see the creative drawings of the founder, Jaslyn Rangson’s dogs outside the cafe), we jumped at the opportunity to cater to our furry friends and their families. We hope that our cafe will be a regular, much-loved haunt for the locals in this area.

Tell us about Jaslyn Cakes’ journey.

Jaslyn’s mum used to bake, so I guess it’s in her DNA. Whilst still a student in London, Jaslyn used to home bake and sell cakes and cookies to friends and family. After graduation, she enrolled in Le Cordon Bleu to study patisserie, and upon returning to Malaysia in 2012, one thing led to another. We did pop-up stalls, supplied cakes (we still do that), opened our first store and never looked back.

Do you spend time concocting new recipes to tempt your customers’ palates?

Definitely – we introduce new items for festive periods and special collaborations, with our most recent one being the Kit Kat with Jaslyn Cakes Father’s Day collaboration.

What is Jaslyn Cakes’ secret to success?

Simple – we ensure that all our food is made with thought and care, and always tastes good. If our customers are happy, we’re happy.

What are your bestsellers in this outlet?

Our pistachio cake – it’s made with butter cream, white chocolate and banana yoghurt loaf – it’s really soft and yoghurty. [Besides that,] our carrot cake and our luxury granola [are popular too].

Anything on the menu for your furry customers?

Yes! Our Puppucinos, with soy or oat milk options, have been a real hit. We even have a dedicated Instagram page @petsofjaslyncakes because we love our fluffy customers so much.

Mess up and play away!

Good news for parents! Here’s a place where your children can play, create a mess, and still learn valuable lessons whilst you sit in comfort watching their happy faces and enjoying a cup of tea.

Little Palette came aboard Plaza Arkadia in September 2022, when Korean owner Cha DongHo decided to open Malaysia’s first K-inspired drawing playground.

Firmly believing that “children learn by playing”, here, children can freely colour, draw and play to their hearts’ content. It’s a great avenue for them to release all that young energy, develop their raw creativity and express their unspoken thoughts and feelings through painting.

All paints are from South Korea and are eco-friendly, hypoallergenic and safe.

With two young sons of his own, Cha has chosen Plaza Arkadia to open his first outlet because of the family, eco-friendly vibe; hoping that many children and parents will have happy experiences at Little Palette.

Classes come in different themes such as Cake Decorating (using paints), Create Your Own Dinosaur, Make Your Own Slime Ball, and Glow Parties, which are rotated regularly. There are also special-theme classes such as Water Balloon week and more. All classes end with an uber-fun 10-minute foam party.

The recommended ages are three to 10, plus special classes for children under three, called “Paint with Mom”. The maximum capacity is 10 children per session and there are always two staff members on hand to supervise activities. The facility is equipped with changing rooms and children are encouraged to be clothed in their swimwear. They are given a quick “shower” before leaving.

Pets are welcome, as long as they are in their cages. And the children can stay on to enjoy the play area after their session is over.

Banking on pet-friendly policy

Furry friends are very much part of the community at Desa ParkCity, and now, you can even see them getting a feel of financing action at Alliance Bank’s first pet-friendly branch in Plaza Arkadia.

Group Chief Consumer Banking Officer Gan Pai Li said that the bank’s vision has always included the concept of a pet-friendly branch, so the opening on Aug 28, 2023 brought the vision to fruition.

“This initiative is derived from our community-centric approach. Ingrained in our DNA is the daily commitment to serve businesses, consumers and communities in a positive way. The pet-friendly branch represents our way of meaningful engagement with our customers in Desa ParkCity and providing them with the convenience of fulfilling their banking needs while out with their furry companions. Beyond being welcoming to pets, we have a range of exciting surprises in store for the Desa ParkCity community and their whiskered friends,” says Gan.

To ensure a positive environment for all, customers are recommended to keep their pets on a leash or in carriers at all times, and are requested to clean up after their fur kids. Pet parents are also welcome to: “Bring snacks and water to keep your fur kids content, or to share with others”.
