Stretch away the pain

Physiotherapy may be nothing new, but The Stretch Clinic’s holistic approach to wellness may prove to be an eye-opener.

In the health and wellness arena in Kuala Lumpur, The Stretch Clinic (TSC) has slowly but surely positioned itself among the top go-to places for a solution for your niggling aches and never-ending pains.

Advocating pain-free movement, flexibility and athletic performance, TSC practises a holistic approach to wellness, offering a diverse range of treatments including physical therapy, active isolated stretching (AIS) and various massage modalities.

TSC’s founder is Liam Harkness, who has decades of experience in the health and wellness industry, as well as a string of credentials under his belt, including Sports Therapy and Clinical Hypnotherapy.

Harkness heads a team of certified and experienced physical therapists in Desa ParkCity, which is TSC’s third and newest branch. TSC’s two other branches are located at The Five, Damansara Heights, Kuala Lumpur, and in Singapore.

To understand this unique treatment approach, Parklife caught up with Harkness and Clinic Manager and Lead Physiotherapist Lee Pei Woon for an exclusive interview (edited for clarity).

Can we have a brief introduction about your practice and the types of services you provide?

Harkness: We are a holistic physiotherapy and lifestyle clinic helping patients recover from injuries and improve their quality of life. Our core belief is to help people move better in a healthy, pain-free body.

What is the difference between TSC and mainstream physiotherapy?

Harkness: The main difference in approach is our understanding of symptoms. We see symptoms as a message that something is out of balance and a change in habit is required to bring the body back into balance to heal.
We do not advocate a cookie-cutter one-size-fits-all approach, as everyone is different, so each client here receives a very personalised and holistic treatment.

Who typically makes up your clientele?

Harkness: Our clientele is diverse, mainly consisting of people who live a “no-compromise” life with a work hard, play hard mindset. They prioritise their health and know they can function better in a healthy, pain-free body. TSC is a sanctuary where they recharge mentally and physically so they can thereafter give 100% to doing what they love.

Lee: We also have clients who are senior citizens, children, and women who are finding it a challenge to conceive or to recover post-birth. Sometimes, we even have entire families who come to us for help with their health issues.

Can you share with us a success story with your client?

Harkness: There are so many! For instance, we had a patient who came all the way from Penang, who had been involved in a serious car accident. He came to us as he had surgery done but still was not healing months after. He was on crutches and his bones were not knitting together.
After assessing him, we managed to identify that his resistance to healing was due to his childhood trauma – when he was a baby and was in the ICU (intensive care unit) for a long time. After helping him to process and accept that, he was able to start healing.

Why have you chosen to open at Desa ParkCity?

Lee: We were looking for a place to open our third branch, and when I saw the beautiful green surroundings and active way of life here at Desa ParkCity, I thought it would be the perfect place, and got Liam on board to open here.

I notice many people here leading active lifestyles – running, biking, playing with their children and walking their dogs.  I thought TSC would be able to help people here take care of and keep their bodies in optimal condition so they  can continue doing what they love.

TSC is a sanctuary where they recharge mentally and physically so they can thereafter give 100% to doing what they love.”

You can find TSC in its signature minimalistic and cosy sun-lit centre at the first floor of The Waterfront, tucked away from the hustle of the crowd (just turn left before Whimsical Ice-creamery). In line with Desa ParkCity’s pet-friendly policy, TSC has a separate area where pets can run around whilst you get your aches and pains attended to and your batteries recharged.
